The Wylie High baseball team showed little rust in a strong return to the field Wednesday after a 13-day layoff.
Noah Smith drove in four runs and collected three hits, while Chase Martin tossed a complete-game shutout, allowing one hit and striking out 10 in Wylie’s 12-0 run-rule win over Lakeview Centennial.
Wylie backed up Martin with four runs in the second inning. Cullum Doan drove in the game’s first run with an RBI single, and Smith followed with a two-run double. Two batters later, a sacrifice fly by Aiden Beck extended the lead to 4-0. The Pirates added two runs in the fifth before a six-run sixth inning put the game out of reach at 12-0.
Wylie improved to 11-2 in District 9-6A and will look to complete the sweep of the Patriots on Friday before taking on crosstown rival Wylie East next week.
Wylie East defeated Garland 9-1 Wednesday to notch its 10th district win.
The Raiders (10-3 in district) scored seven runs in the fourth inning to break a 1-1 tie and take an 8-1 lead. Will Thomas lined a two-run single to center field to give Wylie East the lead for good. Later in the inning, a three-run single by Carter Covington extended the advantage to seven runs.
Garland struggled to make contact against Raiders pitcher Trent Jones. Jones allowed one run on five hits while striking out 13 over six innings. Jaxon Hatchett tossed a scoreless seventh with three strikeouts to complete a strong night on the mound for Wylie East.
Wylie East will conclude its two-game series with Garland at 7 p.m. Friday at Garland.
