Wylie and Wylie East volleyball squads compete at Allen Texas Open

With district competition for the Wylie and Wylie East volleyball programs set to start the first week of September, coaches scheduled a rigorous August slate to prepare the seniors for a potential playoff run. The latest test arrived last weekend at the Allen Texas Open, a regional tournament that draws teams from across North Texas.

Wylie Lady Pirates advance to championship bracket

The Wylie Lady Pirates opened bracket play against familiar rival Waxahachie. After defeating the Lady Indians in a five‑set opener on Aug. 11 and earlier beating Waxahachie in the 2024 Class 6A playoffs, Wylie swept Waxahachie 28‑26, 25‑14 on Saturday. The victory moved the Pirates into the championship bracket, where they faced nationally‑ranked Cornerstone Christian. Cornerstone proved a tough opponent, handing Wylie a 25‑8, 25‑23 loss and ending the tournament run.

Overall, Wylie posted a 12‑2 record heading into the event and went 4‑1 in Allen, including an unbeaten 3‑0 performance in pool play on Friday. The Lady Pirates entered the tournament ranked No. 8 in the Class 6A Texas Girls Coaches Association state poll. Their Allen schedule featured a 25‑17, 25‑19 win over Richardson, a 23‑25, 28‑26, 25‑15 rally victory against Katy, and a 25‑17, 25‑18 triumph over Waco Midway.

Wylie East Lady Raiders finish with a hard‑fought showing

Wylie East earned a spot in the championship bracket after winning a tiebreaker for second place in its pool. The Lady Raiders met Cornerstone Christian in the next round and fell 25‑11, 25‑18, ending their tournament run.

In pool play, Wylie East recorded a 1‑4 overall record and 1‑2 in its pool. The Raiders opened with a 25‑18, 25‑20 loss to McKinney Boyd, then rebounded with a 26‑24, 25‑17 win over Ursuline for their first victory in Allen. Subsequent matches saw a close 23‑25, 25‑15, 25‑22 loss to Woodrow Wilson and a final 25‑15, 18‑25, 25‑21 setback to Waxahachie.

Looking ahead to district play

Both programs will return to Wylie for district matches beginning the first week of September. Coaches say the experience gained against strong regional competition, especially the exposure to nationally ranked teams, will help the seniors refine their skills and build confidence for the upcoming season.

Fans are encouraged to attend the district games to support the Lady Pirates and Lady Raiders as they aim for playoff berths. The Wylie community continues to rally behind its high‑school athletes, recognizing the role of sports in fostering teamwork, discipline, and school spirit.
