In a heartfelt interview with OutKick Dropkick, WWE talent Cody Rhodes remembered the life and legacy of Andy Williams, the 48‑year‑old performer best known in the wrestling world as The Butcher.
Tragic loss after a Pennsylvania match
Williams collapsed after a bout at the Enjoy Wrestling promotion in Pennsylvania and later died, sending shockwaves through the pro‑wrestling community. Rhodes, who helped introduce The Butcher to All Elite Wrestling, described the moment the character emerged from beneath the ring to attack him.
Rhodes recalls Williams’ character and personality
“When I was away from WWE, I actually recruited him, Blade and Bunny for a really fun debut,” Rhodes said. “He came up under the ring and they beat me up, and I definitely didn’t get to spend near enough time with him as a person. But all the things you’re hearing about him—how warm, charismatic, interesting—he wasn’t a guy who needed the gig; he had another gig, and he was super cultured and intelligent.”
Rhodes emphasized that judging The Butcher by his tough exterior—big muscles, tattoos and a mustache—would miss the true nature of the man. “He was truly special, intelligent, artistic, and beautiful,” Rhodes added.
Personal reflections and condolences
“I didn’t get to be around him near enough, but I’m really glad I was part of bringing him into that moment,” Rhodes continued. “He leaves behind multiple locker rooms of people he touched, all of whom have good memories and stories about him.” He also mentioned sharing the news with his wife, Brandi, describing the loss as a shocking and heartbreaking moment.
Williams’ career and other talents
Beyond wrestling, Williams was a musician in the band Every Time I Die. He began training in the early 2010s, debuted in 2015, and formed the tag team The Butcher and The Blade with Guilmette in 2017. The duo appeared in several promotions, including AEW, Ring of Honor, and Total Nonstop Action Wrestling.
The pro‑wrestling world mourned Williams on Sunday, honoring his contributions both inside and outside the ring.
