WTAE Channel 4 announced Sunday that its official media partnership with the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon has been extended through 2028. The renewal will broaden the station’s coverage of the marathon weekend and related events, reinforcing Pittsburgh’s reputation as a premier running destination.
Expanded Coverage Plans
Since 2025, WTAE has served as the marathon’s official media partner. Beginning this year, the partnership will also include the EQT Pittsburgh 10‑Miler & 10K, the Pittsburgh Parade Day Dash, and America’s Mile presented by VisitPITTSBURGH. The station will produce a special episode of The Chronicle that highlights the stories, spirit and community impact of the marathon.
Live coverage will feature Saturday’s Family Day festivities, such as the U.S. Steel Pittsburgh Champions Mile, the UPMC Health Plan/UPMC Sports Medicine Pittsburgh 5K Run, the Sheetz Pittsburgh Toddler Trot, the Chick‑fil‑A Pittsburgh Kids Marathon and the Pittsburgh Pet Walk. On Sunday, WTAE will air a race‑day show with start‑ and finish‑line interviews, on‑course neighborhood highlights, elite race updates and inspiring participant stories.
Community Focus
“Strong media partnerships give us an opportunity to tell more of the stories that make P3R and Pittsburgh’s running community so special,” said Jim Popovich, CEO of the Pittsburgh Marathon. “This renewal will help us reach more people, showcase the many ways people MOVE with us and shine a spotlight on Pittsburgh as a world‑class running city.”
Charles W. Wolfertz III added, “The Pittsburgh Marathon brings together so much of what makes our community special. WTAE Channel 4 is proud to continue our partnership and share the stories behind these events—from elite athletes and longtime runners to first‑time participants, families, volunteers and charitable organizations.”
Event Highlights
The 2027 marathon weekend, scheduled for April 30 through May 2, is expected to draw about 55,000 runners from around the globe. Nearly 100 elite athletes will compete for national titles, a $58,000 prize pool and $10,000 in awards for the men’s and women’s divisions. The marathon also serves as an Olympic Trials qualifier, and the 2027 UPMC Health Plan Pittsburgh Half Marathon will offer the same opportunity.
WTAE will stream a dedicated finish‑line camera on its digital platforms—including Very Local, WTAE.com and the mobile app—giving families, friends and fans worldwide a front‑row seat to cheer on participants.
Looking Ahead
With the partnership secured through 2028, both WTAE and the marathon organizers anticipate deeper community engagement, increased tourism revenue and expanded opportunities for local charities that benefit from race‑related fundraising. The continued collaboration underscores the shared commitment to promoting health, family activity and civic pride across Pittsburgh.
