A person was taken into custody early Sunday morning after driving the wrong way on I-235 and crashing into multiple vehicles in Des Moines.
The first crash happened near the Pennsylvania Avenue exit around 4:30 a.m. The vehicle appears to have smashed head-on into a car on the shoulder before the driver tried to leave by going up a grassy hill. He was driving west in the eastbound lanes.
Des Moines police caught up with the suspect, who then drove back down the hill and hit one of their squad cars, according to video footage. Police then took the person to the ground and into custody after a brief struggle.
Investigators say the driver hit another vehicle shortly before turning to drive the wrong way on I-235. The suspect’s identity has not been released by DMPD.
The exit lanes were closed for a short time while the vehicle was towed, but have since reopened.
