WRAL hosts live town hall on youth violence with police, officials and teens

Raleigh, N.C. – On Wednesday at 7 p.m., WRAL will broadcast a live, hour‑long town hall focused on youth violence in the Wake County area. The program brings together law‑enforcement leaders, community advocates and local teenagers to examine what is driving violent behavior among young people and to explore practical solutions that families, schools and neighborhoods can implement.

Panel of public‑safety officials

Raleigh Police Chief Rico Boyce and Wake County Sheriff Willie Rowe are slated to appear on the panel. Both officials will share recent crime‑statistics trends, describe ongoing prevention initiatives, and answer questions from viewers about how law enforcement is working with schools and community groups to keep streets safe.

Community voices and youth input

In the weeks leading up to the broadcast, WRAL reporters met with a cross‑section of community leaders and teenagers to gather perspectives on the problem. North Carolina Central University men’s basketball coach LeVelle Moton emphasized the importance of adults truly listening to young people. “Even though we know what it’s like to be teenagers, we don’t know what it’s like to be them,” Moton said. “They have certain needs and wants that often go unheard.”

One teenager interviewed by WRAL suggested that providing positive, structured activities could make a real difference. “It’s important to help out with the community so everyone has something to do over the summer and on Friday nights,” the teen explained. The panel will invite additional input from viewers, encouraging families to submit questions and ideas via email.

What families, schools and neighborhoods can do

The discussion will address several actionable steps. Experts will talk about expanding after‑school programs, increasing mentorship opportunities, and fostering stronger partnerships between law enforcement and faith‑based organizations. Parents are urged to stay engaged with their children’s daily lives, monitor online activity, and reinforce the value of personal responsibility.

Local faith groups have already pledged to host community service events and mentorship nights aimed at giving teens constructive outlets for their energy. School administrators plan to review disciplinary policies to ensure they balance accountability with support services such as counseling and conflict‑resolution training.

How to watch and participate

The live broadcast will air on WRAL at 7 p.m. and continue from 7:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on WRAL News+ and the station’s YouTube channel. Viewers can submit questions and comments in advance to [email protected]. The station encourages residents of Raleigh, Wake County and surrounding areas to tune in, share their concerns, and help shape a safer future for the region’s youth.
