West Alabama Works, the workforce arm of the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama, is gearing up for a milestone event. The Worlds of Work career fair will celebrate its 10th anniversary on October 14‑15 at Shelton State Community College’s Martin Campus on Old Greensboro Road.
Ten Years of Connecting Students to Meaningful Jobs
Founded in 2015, Worlds of Work has grown into a model for regional career fairs. Organizers anticipate more than 4,400 students from 53 schools will attend, meeting 110 exhibitors representing 80 companies across West Alabama.
Students will rotate through hands‑on demonstrations covering eleven high‑growth pathways: agriculture, construction, cosmetology, education, energy and utilities, engineering and environment, healthcare, hospitality and tourism, manufacturing and automotive, public safety, and transportation and logistics. The breadth of options underscores the region’s commitment to preparing a skilled workforce for today’s economy.
Community Leaders Back the Initiative
Donny Jones, executive vice president and chief workforce officer of the Chamber and executive director of West Alabama Works, said, “For ten years, Worlds of Work has helped students see that meaningful careers are available right here in West Alabama. This anniversary gives us an opportunity to celebrate the students, educators, employers, and community partners who have helped build WOW while continuing the work of preparing our future workforce one student at a time.”
A VIP breakfast for business, education, and workforce leaders will open at 7 a.m. on October 15. Greg Reed, secretary of the Alabama Department of Workforce, is slated to speak, highlighting the state’s ongoing investment in job training and employer‑student partnerships.
Strong Corporate Support
Mercedes‑Benz U.S. International serves as the event’s top sponsor, reflecting the automotive industry’s vital role in the local economy. Other major sponsors include Michelin North America, Shelton State, Hunt Refining Company, and Phifer Incorporated, with dozens of additional businesses, schools, and local governments contributing resources.
By bringing together educators, employers, and students in one place, Worlds of Work helps families see clear pathways to stable, well‑paid employment—an essential component of strong, traditional families and thriving neighborhoods.
How to Get Involved
Students, parents, and educators interested in attending should contact their school’s career counselor or visit worldsofwork.com for registration details. The event is free to students, and exhibitors are encouraged to provide interactive, real‑world experiences that showcase the day‑to‑day realities of their professions.
As West Alabama continues to grow, events like Worlds of Work demonstrate the power of community collaboration, faith‑based values, and a commitment to individual liberty through economic opportunity. The fair not only equips young people with skills but also strengthens the fabric of the region by keeping talent and jobs close to home.
