Woman in her 70s killed after vehicle strikes her in North Side crosswalk

San Antonio – A tragic accident occurred on Tuesday morning when a vehicle struck a pedestrian using a crosswalk on the North Side of the city. Officers from the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) responded just before 11:30 a.m. to the intersection of Thousand Oaks Drive and Uhr Lane.

The woman, who has not yet been identified, was reported to be in her 70s. SAPD officials said she suffered critical injuries at the scene and was quickly placed in an ambulance for transport to a local hospital. While en route, paramedics pronounced her dead.

According to the police report, the driver of the vehicle stopped and attempted to render aid to the victim. The driver is cooperating fully with investigators, and SAPD has indicated that no criminal charges are expected at this time.

City officials reminded residents of the importance of pedestrian safety, especially in high‑traffic areas. “We encourage drivers to stay alert and obey traffic signals, and we ask pedestrians to use crosswalks responsibly,” said a SAPD spokesperson. The department also noted that the intersection is equipped with standard traffic signals, but urged the community to remain vigilant.

Community response

Neighbors and local businesses expressed sorrow over the loss of a senior member of the community. Several residents posted messages of condolence on social media, emphasizing the need for continued awareness and caution on city streets.

While the investigation remains ongoing, SAPD will continue to gather evidence, including any dash‑cam footage and witness statements, to fully understand the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Safety reminders

Authorities recommend the following steps to help prevent similar incidents:

  • Always look both ways before entering a crosswalk, even when you have the right of way.
  • Drivers should reduce speed in residential areas and be prepared to stop for pedestrians.
  • Pedestrians should make eye contact with drivers before crossing, especially at intersections without dedicated pedestrian signals.

For more information on pedestrian safety initiatives in San Antonio, residents can visit the SAPD website or contact the department directly.
