A woman was bitten by an alligator while she was swimming in the Silver River near Ocala in Marion County, Florida, over the weekend, officials said. The woman was swimming in the river when she was bitten in the arm by the gator, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials said.
Good Samaritans helped her out of the water and got her to shore before she was taken to a local hospital for treatment. FWC officers and a nuisance alligator trapper responded, and on Sunday, a 9-foot-8 alligator was removed from the area, officials said.
The incident is just the latest alligator attack in Florida this year. A woman was killed in June after she was attacked by an alligator while swimming in the Econlockhatchee River in the Little Big Econ State Forest in Seminole County. Earlier in June, a man was attacked by an alligator while snorkeling in the Rainbow River in Marion County. And on July 3, a man was attacked by an alligator while fishing in his backyard in North Fort Myers.
FWC officials said serious injuries caused by alligators are rare in Florida. Anyone with concerns about an alligator can call the FWC’s Nuisance Alligator Hotline at 866-FWC-GATOR (866-392-4286).
