WKTV Community Media launched the “Voces Latina” (Hispanic Voices) project to capture the personal stories of Hispanic residents in West Michigan. The effort, supported by a major gift from the Wege Foundation, has already recorded more than 50 one‑on‑one interviews.
Why the project matters
Host Yeli Romero explained that the goal is to ensure the memories, challenges, and achievements of the region’s Hispanic community become part of the permanent historical record. “I wanted to be part of this project because I believe our voices, experiences, and contributions to this country deserve to be heard and remembered,” Romero said.
Stories of everyday Americans
The interviews explore a range of topics, from growing up in the United States and navigating the path to citizenship to the ways families have built businesses, pursued education, and contributed to local culture. Participants describe themselves as business owners, artists, educators, and professionals who help make Wyoming and the surrounding West Michigan area stronger and more diverse.
Accessing the archive
All recorded interviews are available on WKTV Community Media’s YouTube channel and are also broadcast regularly on the station’s local cable channel. By making the content publicly accessible, the project aims to foster greater understanding among all West Michigan residents about the barriers Hispanic people face and the positive impact they have on the region.
Community impact
Romero hopes the conversations will build bridges between longtime residents and newer Hispanic neighbors, highlighting shared values such as hard work, family, and faith. The project aligns with broader efforts to celebrate the cultural richness of West Michigan while reinforcing the importance of preserving local heritage for future generations.
