Wisconsin volleyball celebrated a double honor week on Monday when freshman outside hitter Decelise Champion received the Big Ten Freshman of the Week award and senior setter Charlie Fuerbringer was named Big Ten Setter of the Week.
Champion’s breakout performance
In just her third career match, Champion logged a 20‑kill, 11‑dig, three‑block line against Marquette, posting a .441 hitting percentage (20 kills, 5 errors on 34 attempts). She added six kills on nine swings in a single set versus Milwaukee. Across five total sets she averaged 5.20 kills, 2.20 digs and 5.50 points per set, marking her first conference accolade.
Fuerbringer leads the offense
Setter Charlie Fuerbringer guided the Badgers to a perfect 2‑0 week, averaging 13.50 assists and 2.75 digs per set over eight sets. Against the Panthers she recorded her sixth double‑double of the season with 54 assists and 16 digs, helping Wisconsin post team hitting percentages above .300 in both matches (.369 vs. Marquette, .326 vs. Milwaukee). This is Fuerbringer’s sixth career Big Ten Setter of the Week honor.
Upcoming Big Ten matchups
The Badgers now turn to conference play, hosting No. 20 Oregon (9‑1) Thursday at 7 p.m. in the UW Field House, followed by a road game at Purdue’s Mackey Arena in West Lafayette, Indiana, on Sunday.
Other conference honors
In the Horizon League, Green Bay’s junior outside hitter Diane Pichelman earned the Under Armour #HLVB Player of the Week after leading the Phoenix to a 2‑0 opening weekend with sweeps of Western Illinois. Pichelman posted 10 kills per match on a .655 attacking percentage and averaged 2.5 blocks per match.
Marquette also saw recognition from the BIG EAST: goalkeeper Mia Hurd was named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week, and forward Haley Christianson made the Weekly Honor Roll after scoring two goals in a 3‑1 win over Eastern Illinois. Junior outside hitter Carson Tyler earned BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week, while freshman setter Luanna Markus joined the Honor Roll.
