The Universities of Wisconsin are reaching out to the public as they embark on the search for a new president. A series of public listening sessions will be held across the state next week, inviting students, faculty, staff, and community members to share their thoughts on the qualities and priorities they believe are essential for the next leader of the university system.
Community Engagement in Leadership Selection
Regent Ashok Rai, chair of the Presidential Search Committee, emphasized the importance of these sessions, stating, “The Universities of Wisconsin belong to the people of this state, and that is why these listening sessions matter.” The committee is looking for a president who can connect with communities across Wisconsin and lead the universities toward continued opportunity and innovation.
The search for a new president follows the unexpected dismissal of former president Jay Rothman by the UW Board of Regents in April. Although the specifics of Rothman’s departure remain confidential, it was reportedly due to his lack of urgency in addressing critical issues such as artificial intelligence, which led to trust and transparency concerns within the system.
In the interim, UW-Superior Chancellor Renée Wachter has stepped in as the acting leader, effective May 18. The listening sessions are open to the public, offering an opportunity for attendees to engage directly with the Presidential Search Committee. For those unable to attend in person, virtual viewing options and online comment submissions are available.
Session Schedule
The listening sessions are scheduled as follows:
- Tuesday, June 9, 2026
- Wednesday, June 10, 2026
- Thursday, June 11, 2026
These sessions represent a significant opportunity for the community to influence the future direction of the Universities of Wisconsin, ensuring that the institution’s leadership aligns with the values and needs of its stakeholders.
