Omaha families will soon be able to lace up their skates as the Winterland outdoor ice skating rink returns to Heartwood Preserve for its third year. For the first time the rink opens in October, responding to strong community demand for an earlier start to the season.
Free skating for all ages
All sessions are free of charge. “All free. Families, kids 3 and older, everybody is welcome. All free, including if you need socks. If you forget your socks, come on out they’re free!” said Sean Guard of Ice America, the organization that operates the rink.
Skaters can reserve a 90‑minute slot online up to two weeks in advance, while a limited number of walk‑up spots will be available on a first‑come, first‑served basis. The rink is expected to remain open through January 18, giving residents plenty of time to enjoy the ice before the winter thaw.
Saturday night movies and holiday cheer
Throughout November, the rink will host a movie night each Saturday. Visitors can watch the film while gliding on the ice or enjoy it from the sidelines, creating a relaxed, family‑friendly atmosphere.
In December, the rink will take on a festive look with holiday decorations and additional family activities. The seasonal enhancements are designed to make the rink a centerpiece of Omaha’s winter celebrations.
How to join the fun
Reservations and event details are available on the Heartwood Omaha events page. Because the rink is free, the community encourages anyone who wants to experience outdoor skating—whether seasoned skaters or first‑timers—to come out and enjoy the crisp winter air.
Winterland’s early opening and extended schedule reflect the growing popularity of outdoor recreation in Omaha. By offering a safe, free, and family‑oriented activity, the rink supports the city’s tradition of fostering strong neighborhoods and providing wholesome leisure options for parents and children alike.
