Wings edge Sun 86-83 in Hartford thriller

The Dallas Wings came into PeoplesBank Arena on Thursday night and left with a hard-fought 86-83 victory over the Connecticut Sun, spoiling the home crowd’s evening in a game that came down to the final possessions.

Paige Bueckers was the story for Dallas, turning in a dominant all-around performance that proved to be the difference. The Wings guard finished with 25 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists — a near triple-double that gave Connecticut’s defense no clean answer all night. Her ability to score, facilitate, and crash the glass made her the engine of everything Dallas ran offensively, and her stat line reflected just how complete her effort was.

Connecticut’s best answer came from Leila Lacan, who led the Sun with 18 points and added five assists in a determined showing. Lacan kept Connecticut competitive throughout, but the Sun ultimately couldn’t generate enough support around her to overcome the Wings’ balanced attack. Brittney Griner provided a physical presence in the paint, hauling down a game-high 11 rebounds to give Connecticut second-chance opportunities, but the Sun couldn’t convert enough of those looks to close the gap.

Dallas shot an efficient 49 percent from the field, connecting on 33 of 68 attempts. The Wings also knocked down 9 of 26 three-point attempts, a 35-percent clip that provided enough spacing to keep Connecticut’s defense scrambling. Dallas went 11-of-16 from the free-throw line, a 69-percent mark that left some points on the board but proved sufficient in a three-point final margin.

The Wings finished with 18 assists on the night, a number that speaks to the ball movement Dallas relied on to generate quality looks. Bueckers was at the center of that distribution, but the Wings clearly benefited from a team-first offensive approach that Connecticut struggled to disrupt consistently.

Defensively, Dallas recorded four steals and three blocks, adding to the Sun’s difficulties on the offensive end. The Wings did turn the ball over 15 times in total — a number that kept Connecticut in the game and gave the Sun multiple opportunities to chip away at the deficit. Connecticut was unable to fully capitalize on those miscues, however, and Dallas managed to protect its slim lead when it mattered most.

The three-point final margin tells the story of how closely contested this game was from start to finish. Connecticut had every chance to pull ahead or tie late, but the Wings’ execution in the clutch, led by Bueckers, proved just enough to secure the road win. The Sun, playing in front of their home fans at PeoplesBank Arena in Hartford, will need to regroup after letting a winnable game slip away.

For Dallas, the victory represents a quality road result against a Connecticut team that is always difficult to beat on its home floor. Bueckers’ performance will draw the most attention, but the Wings’ collective efficiency on offense — nearly half their field-goal attempts converted — was the foundation of a satisfying three-point road triumph.
