New research has found that the wine you choose can reveal more about your personality than you might think. Psychologists have discovered that four specific traits – openness, agreeableness, extraversion, and neuroticism – play a role in wine selection.
The Study
Researchers analyzed 9,917 wine reviews left on an e-commerce wine platform, using artificial intelligence to infer personality traits from the language used to describe the wines. They found that shoppers whose reviews suggested higher openness and agreeableness leaned towards higher-ABV wines, while those with extraversion and neuroticism traits preferred lower-ABV wines.
The study also found that a country’s reputation can shape how sophisticated, trustworthy, or high-quality a bottle of wine seems, independent of what’s actually in the glass. French wines were perceived as the most sophisticated and prestigious, while American wines were seen as competent and rugged.
Implications
The research could provide useful groundwork for personalized wine recommendations in the future, potentially easing the decision fatigue that comes with choosing a bottle of wine. Whether or not the person picking the wine means to, their choice sends a signal to others.
