HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY — Deputies with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a robbery at a gas station on US Highway 301 in Wimauma at about 5:38 p.m. on Tuesday. The incident involved a couple who had arranged to meet an interested buyer to sell a laptop. The suspect, later identified as 23‑year‑old Jeremiah Carson Jr., pretended to be the buyer, seized the laptop and fled the scene.
Investigation and pursuit
After the theft, deputies began tracking the suspect on foot. Their search led them to an open sliding glass door at a nearby townhome. Inside the unit, officers recovered the dark hoodie the suspect wore during the robbery, confirming his presence.
Ground units established a perimeter while the sheriff’s office Aviation Unit launched an aerial search. Flight crew members spotted Carson walking along Nebula Court and relayed his exact location to deputies on the ground. The coordinated effort allowed law enforcement to apprehend Carson without further incident.
Charges filed
Carson was booked on three counts: grand theft in the third degree (theft of property valued between $750 and $5,000), burglary of an unoccupied dwelling, and resisting an officer without violence. The charges reflect both the theft of the laptop and the unlawful entry into the townhome.
Deputies emphasized that the swift response was possible because of the combined use of ground and air resources, as well as community vigilance. The couple’s decision to meet at a public gas station, while common for online transactions, underscored the risks of arranging in‑person exchanges without proper safety measures.
Public‑safety reminder
Law enforcement officials reminded residents to exercise caution when conducting online sales. Recommended practices include meeting in well‑lit, populated areas, bringing a friend, and notifying a trusted person of the meeting location and time. Officers also urged anyone who suspects fraudulent activity to contact the sheriff’s office immediately.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the broader circumstances of the fake online sale, including whether the suspect was involved in other similar schemes. No additional arrests have been reported at this time.
Community impact
Wimauma residents expressed relief that the suspect was quickly apprehended and that the stolen laptop was recovered. The incident serves as a reminder that while online marketplaces provide convenient avenues for buying and selling, they also create opportunities for dishonest individuals to exploit unsuspecting citizens.
Authorities reaffirm their commitment to protecting the community and maintaining a safe environment for all residents of Wimauma and the surrounding Hillsborough County area.
