Wilmer Grass Fire Burns 65 Acres, Dozens of Agencies Respond

A fast‑moving grass fire broke out on the afternoon of August 27 in the Dallas County city of Wilmer, scorching roughly 65 acres of brush and prairie near the Patrick Baptist Church in Ferris on Parkinson Road. The Wilmer Fire Department quickly sounded the alarm, and within minutes fire‑rescue crews from Dallas, surrounding municipalities and county sheriffs converged on the scene.

Coordinated County‑wide Response

More than a dozen agencies joined the effort, including Dallas Fire‑Rescue, Dallas County Fire and Sheriff’s Office, and fire departments from Hutchins, Bristol, Combine, Ferris, Red Oak, Ennis, Palmer, Seagoville and Crandall. Together they established containment lines, deployed aerial water drops, and worked to protect nearby homes and structures.

Firefighters arrived before the fire could be formally reported, a testament to the region’s robust mutual‑aid agreements and the dedication of first‑responders who train for exactly these kinds of emergencies.

Church Members Evacuated Safely

Pastor Tyler Poole of Patrick Baptist Church recounted the frantic moments as the blaze approached the church property. “It was a little after 4:30 p.m. when someone called and said they saw a fire a short distance away. The wind was blowing toward us, so we got everyone off the building, moved valuables inside, and herded the animals out,” Poole said.

Poole, his family and about ten other congregants were evacuated safely, along with the church’s cat, Mango, who was found calmly perched on the front porch. “My wife said, ‘you better make sure to get Mango.’ I didn’t know where he was, but he was right there, acting like everything was fine,” Poole recalled.

Containment Achieved, Investigation Ongoing

By evening, fire crews had pushed the flames back to the fence line surrounding the church property. Smoke lingered over the area, but the fire was declared contained after coordinated ground and aerial efforts. No injuries were reported, and the Wilmer Fire Department confirmed that the cause of the blaze remains undetermined.

Dallas County Sheriff’s Office released aerial photographs showing the extent of the burn scar, highlighting the effectiveness of the rapid, multi‑agency response. The images also serve as a reminder of the importance of community preparedness and the vital role of local first‑responders.

Community Vigilance Moving Forward

Officials urged residents to remain vigilant during the hot, dry season, to clear brush around homes, and to report any signs of fire immediately. The collaborative effort demonstrated how Dallas County’s network of fire and law‑enforcement agencies can protect neighborhoods when disaster strikes.
