At the Oct. 6 Commissioners Court meeting, Williamson County Facilities Manager Dale Butler announced a comprehensive plan to improve parks, public facilities and historic sites across the county. The projects, slated for completion between spring 2027 and fall 2027, reflect the county’s commitment to providing safe, modern amenities for families and preserving the community’s heritage.
Parks and Recreation
Work has begun at Southwest Williamson County Regional Park in Leander. The Lonestar Soccer Club is sponsoring the conversion of four fields to artificial turf, a move that will extend playing seasons and reduce maintenance costs. Construction is on schedule to finish in spring 2027.
River Ranch County Park is also receiving upgrades. Trail improvements will enhance accessibility for hikers and cyclists, while the Interpretive Center’s roof is being repaired and upgraded to protect educational exhibits from the elements.
County Facilities
The Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter is undergoing a major expansion. A new multistory building will house adoption spaces and a modern veterinary clinic, providing better care for animals and a more welcoming environment for prospective adopters. The shelter is expected to be operational by fall 2027.
Infrastructure upgrades are planned for the Juvenile Justice Center, including building expansions, site enhancements and storm‑water detention pond management to improve safety and compliance with environmental standards.
A 9,450‑square‑foot training facility for the Road and Bridge Department is also in the pipeline. The building will serve as a dedicated classroom and workshop space for staff development and is slated for completion in fall 2027.
Historic Preservation
In downtown Georgetown, the historic courthouse is receiving a careful restoration. Work includes restoring the original terrazzo flooring, upgrading lighting, reconditioning the HVAC system and remodeling interior spaces to preserve the building’s architectural integrity while meeting modern code requirements.
Additional modernization efforts are underway at the Justice Center, where elevators will be upgraded and HVAC units replaced to improve energy efficiency and reliability for staff and the public.
Community Impact
These projects are designed to strengthen the quality of life for Williamson County residents. Upgraded parks provide safe, family‑friendly recreation spaces; the new animal‑shelter facilities enhance animal welfare; and historic preservation safeguards the county’s cultural legacy for future generations. County officials emphasized that the timelines and budgets have been carefully planned to minimize disruption while delivering lasting benefits.
Commissioners Court members expressed strong support for the initiatives, noting that they align with the county’s long‑term strategic plan to invest in infrastructure, promote community health and honor local history. Residents can expect to see visible progress over the next two years as construction moves forward.
