Second Opinion Leads to Life-Saving Diagnosis

A concerned Shatner turned to a doctor friend for another opinion. The friend’s examination led to a life-saving diagnosis. Shatner said an oncologist told him, ‘We got to take that out now.’ The cancer had already grown inside his body, spreading to his brain and lung.

Shatner underwent surgery to remove the tumor and later completed two years of immunotherapy. His daughter, Melanie Shatner Gretsch, was also fighting her own life-threatening diagnosis. She discovered a lump in her breast nearly a year before her father’s diagnosis and was later diagnosed with HER2-positive breast cancer that had spread to the lymph nodes in her chest.

Gretsch’s treatment was intense, including months of chemotherapy, 30 rounds of radiation, a double mastectomy, and a year of immunotherapy. By the end of 2024, both Shatner and Gretsch were declared cancer-free.
