Willamette High School social studies teacher Nate Jackson has been selected as one of Oregon’s 17 regional teachers of the year for the 2026‑27 school year. The Oregon Department of Education announced the honor at a staff meeting on September 23, alongside the Oregon Lottery, which partners on the statewide Teacher of the Year program.
Jackson, who has been teaching at Willamette since 2019, is also known for his work as an emcee for University of Oregon athletic events. While he still accepts occasional freelance emcee gigs, he says his true passion now lies in the classroom.
“It’s shocking because I never expected to win an award for teaching,” Jackson told Lookout Eugene‑Springfield. “Each time I go to work, I work my hardest, like every other teacher, and I look to try to make lives better. So to win an award to be acknowledged for that in front of my colleagues, it was a pleasure.”
Teaching philosophy grounded in multiple perspectives
When covering history, Jackson strives to present students with a range of viewpoints, including the experiences of Black, Latino and female Americans during the Great Depression. “My goal as a teacher is not to tell you what to think,” he explained. “I present evidence, show multiple perspectives, and let students decide based on what they read.”
Colleagues note that his classroom environment is built on respect, humor and high expectations. A fellow teacher who nominated Jackson said, “Students feel safe taking academic risks, asking questions, and expressing their perspectives.”
Recognition and award details
The regional Teacher of the Year award includes a $1,000 cash prize and makes the recipient a semifinalist for the statewide Oregon Teacher of the Year, which will be announced later this fall. The statewide winner receives a $10,000 cash prize, and the teacher’s school receives an additional $5,000.
Oregon Lottery Director Mike Wells praised the honorees, stating, “These are exceptional educators who inspire students daily across Oregon. We are honored to celebrate their dedication and the lasting impact they have on our students and families.”
Jackson was nominated after a colleague highlighted his ability to build strong relationships with students and his commitment to equity and community involvement. The nomination process, overseen by the 19 Education Service Districts, evaluates leadership, instructional expertise, community service and vision.
