Wiley’s Championship BBQ Is Worth the Drive to Forsyth

People in Winston-Salem who know barbecue will tell you to go to Wiley’s on a weekend, and they’ll say it like it’s obvious. It is, once you’ve been.

Wiley’s Championship BBQ sits on South Stratford Road, in a squat building that doesn’t announce itself much from the street. The sign is there. The parking lot fills up. Walk in on a Saturday around noon and you’ll see families, construction workers, a few people who drove in from out of town, and regulars who have a table they prefer. The room is straightforward — a counter, some tables, walls that reflect a competition history most backyard pitmasters would envy. Jay Wiley and his family have collected national championship hardware in barbecue competition, and the food inside the restaurant backs that up without needing to shout about it.

The pork here is the reason you come. The pulled pork is smoked low and slow over wood, and it arrives with enough bark and smoke ring to prove it. This isn’t the kind of place where “smoked” means sitting in a warmer. You can taste the difference. Order the pork plate and you get two sides; the baked beans are made in-house and have actual pork folded into them, which puts them well above the canned-and-doctored versions you find elsewhere. The slaw is vinegar-forward, which is the right call when the meat is this rich.

They do brisket too, and it’s worth getting if you catch it early in the day before it runs out. Same with the ribs — there’s a reason people drive from Greensboro and beyond for them. Expect to spend somewhere in the $12–$18 range for a plate, which is reasonable for the quality. This is not a cheap lunch, but it’s not priced like it has something to prove either.

Go on a rainy Saturday and the place has a particular quality to it. People linger. The smell hits you before you’re through the door. The staff moves at a deliberate pace because the food moves at a deliberate pace, and that’s just how it works. There’s no sense in rushing smoked meat.

The restaurant has competition trophies visible if you look around, but they don’t plaster the walls with them aggressively. It reads more like a family keeps them out because they earned them, not because they want to sell you on something. The food sells itself well enough.

Winston-Salem has a decent barbecue landscape, but Wiley’s operates at a level that most local spots don’t reach, and it does it without the trappings of a concept restaurant. No craft cocktail list, no reclaimed wood aesthetic. Just good pit work, good sides, and a room full of people who showed up hungry and knew what they were getting into.

If you haven’t been, go on a weekend morning when they open, grab a seat, and start with the pulled pork. That’s the right introduction.
