San Antonio nonprofits rally to keep families warm as coat prices surge

After consulting firm AlixPartners reported a 24% jump in jacket prices last year, San Antonio-area charities are preparing for a heightened need for warm clothing this winter. Though recent temperatures have been milder than average, the KSAT Weather Authority warns that a sudden cold snap could arrive at any time.

United Way’s Project Warmth aims for 2,000 new coats

“We collect now so that if we have a sudden cold snap, families aren’t scrambling to buy coats,” said Elise Wyatt, director of community engagement for United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County. United Way’s annual Project Warmth coat drive targets the collection of 2,000 new coats, which will be distributed through its grant program to more than 650 families. Wyatt noted that purchasing coats each year can become a financial strain, especially for children.

Councilwoman Misty Spears adds to the effort

District 9 Councilwoman Misty Spears is also spearheading a parallel collection, seeking 700 new and gently used coats for three partner nonprofits: Corazón Ministries, Family Violence Prevention Services, and Soldiers’ Angels. Her office gathered 500 coats last year, and she hopes the expanded goal will reach even more vulnerable neighbors.

“It is literally a lifesaving effort,” said Erika Borrego, president and CEO of Corazón Ministries, which offers no‑barrier services to people experiencing homelessness. Borrego explained that the organization sees 300 to 400 individuals daily for a range of assistance, and that numbers spike when temperatures drop.

Library’s “Wall of Warmth” offers a low‑barrier option

The San Antonio Public Library provides another avenue for community members to help. At the Potranco Branch, the “Wall of Warmth” operates on a “take what you need, leave what you can” model. Library spokesperson Dale McNeill said staff recognized a growing need for coats, gloves, hats, and scarves among patrons.

“People were coming into the library that needed a coat, gloves or a hat,” McNeill explained. The program accepts store‑bought, handmade, or gently used items, provided they are clean. Local crafters also contribute knitted or crocheted pieces to keep the wall stocked.

How you can contribute

Residents who can afford a new coat are encouraged to donate directly to United Way’s Project Warmth or to Councilwoman Spears’ collection points. Those without a new coat to give can still support the effort by dropping off gently used, clean garments at the Potranco Library’s Wall of Warmth.

“A warm coat can make a real difference for a child, a parent, or a survivor who needs a little extra kindness this winter,” Spears said. By acting now, the community can ensure that families are not left out in the cold should an unexpected freeze arrive.

Why the push matters

Rising apparel costs place additional pressure on low‑income households already stretched by housing, food, and healthcare expenses. Local nonprofits stress that a simple coat can prevent health complications, reduce emergency room visits, and provide a sense of dignity during the harsh winter months.

With coordinated efforts from United Way, city officials, and the public library, San Antonio is poised to meet the increased demand and keep neighbors warm despite soaring coat prices.
