Wild, Fresh, and Utterly Alaskan: Why Resolution Bay Charters Will Ruin All Future Fishing Trips

There is a moment, somewhere between your second pint of Broken Tooth Ale and a plate of reindeer sausage flatbread, when Anchorage stops feeling like a stopover and starts feeling like a destination you should have found years ago. That moment, for me, happened at 49th State Brewing Company on Northern Lights Boulevard, and I have been trying to talk everyone I know into making the same discovery ever since.

Tucked into the Inlet Tower Hotel building in Midtown Anchorage, 49th State Brewing is one of those rare places that manages to feel simultaneously local and welcoming to anyone who walks through the door. It is sprawling enough to host a lively Friday crowd but laid out in a way that still lets you carve out a quiet corner booth if you want one. The interior leans into its Alaskan identity without overdoing it — think warm wood, clean lines, and enough exposed industrial detail to feel current without feeling cold.

The brewing program is the real anchor here. The team brews a rotating lineup of craft beers on-site, and the selections skew toward bold, session-friendly styles that pair beautifully with the kind of hearty food Anchorage demands. The Broken Tooth Pale Ale has become something of a local institution, and the seasonal releases — an imperial stout in winter, a bright wheat ale when the summer sun refuses to set — are worth planning a visit around. Ask your server what just tapped. They will know, and they will be enthusiastic about it.

The food menu punches well above what you might expect from a brewpub. The kitchen takes local sourcing seriously, and you will find Alaskan seafood, locally raised meats, and seasonal vegetables appearing throughout the menu in preparations that are unfussy but genuinely good. The halibut tacos are outstanding. The reindeer chili, served with warm cornbread, is the kind of thing you want after a long day on a trail. And the wood-fired flatbreads are flexible enough to anchor a full meal or serve as shareable appetizers for a group working through a flight of samplers.

What makes 49th State feel special beyond the food and drink is the atmosphere it generates almost effortlessly. On any given evening you will find Alaska State Fair alumni at the bar, visiting geologists comparing notes over nachos, and families celebrating birthdays in the back booths. It is a thoroughly Anchorage crowd, and being part of it for a few hours is its own kind of travel experience.

The location is convenient to downtown and to several of Anchorage’s major hotels, making it an easy choice for a first night in town or a last meal before an early flight. Parking is available, the staff is unhurried and knowledgeable, and the kitchen runs late enough to accommodate travelers arriving on evening flights from the Lower 48.

If you are assembling a short list of places that will actually tell you something true about Anchorage — about its character, its appetite, its particular brand of end-of-the-road confidence — 49th State Brewing belongs near the top. Order the flight, try the halibut, and settle in. Alaska has a way of keeping you longer than you planned, and a place like this makes that very easy to accept.
