The Wicker Park community in Chicago is eagerly anticipating the reopening of its post office, which is set to be located on Damen Avenue. This comes nearly a year and a half after the previous post office on Ashland Avenue closed due to an expired lease, leaving residents without a local postal service.
A sign indicating the presence of the United States Postal Service has been spotted at a storefront in the shopping center at 1500-1520 N. Damen Ave., next to a Lou Malnati’s restaurant. This location is part of a development that was recently acquired by Stocking Urban and Ashland Ventures for over $16 million. The development also includes spaces previously occupied by the Violet Hour cocktail bar and other retail tenants.
Despite the visible signage, the Postal Service has not released further information about the new location. Spokesperson Tim Norman stated that there is no additional information available at this time, and the agency’s website has yet to list the new Wicker Park location.
The closure of the previous post office at 1240 N. Ashland Ave. in early 2025 led to frustration among residents who now have to travel to other neighborhoods such as Logan Square and Lincoln Park for postal services. Initially, the Postal Service had assured that retail services would continue at the Ashland location until preparations for the new site were complete, but this did not occur.
The reopening of a post office in Wicker Park is a significant development for the neighborhood, as it restores a vital service that many residents rely on for mailing and shipping needs. The community looks forward to the convenience and accessibility that the new location will provide once operational.
