Incident Sparks Benches-Clearing Altercation
The incident occurred in the top of the third inning, when Martin threw a pitch that hit the backstop, followed by another pitch that clipped the brim of Stewart’s helmet. Stewart took exception to the pitches and pointed his bat at Martin, leading to a benches-clearing altercation.
White Sox catcher Edgar Quero played a key role in preventing the situation from escalating further, as he stopped Stewart from walking towards Martin. The umpires ultimately decided to eject Martin from the game.
The Reds went on to win the game 9-8, with Stewart contributing two hits, including a home run in the first inning. The White Sox had taken the lead earlier in the game but were unable to hold on after Martin’s ejection.
