White County Public Safety rescues stranded climber on Mount Yonah

White County, Ga. – On Thursday afternoon, a climber attempting a free climb on Mount Yonah found himself hanging from a ledge after his rope slipped. Using his cell phone, he dialed 911 and described his precarious position to White County Public Safety officials.

Rapid response with modern tools

Dispatchers immediately alerted the county’s rescue unit. To pinpoint the exact location on the rugged mountainside, a drone equipped with a high‑resolution camera was launched. The aerial footage allowed rescuers to see the climber’s position and assess the safest route for a ground team.

Once the climber’s location was confirmed, a trained rappelling crew assembled a rope system from the top of the cliff. Lead rescuer Will Roper, whose name was shared by the county on social media, descended the rope, reached the stranded climber, and secured him with a harness.

Safe descent and community gratitude

After securing the climber, the rescue team carefully lowered him to solid ground. The man was unharmed aside from a few scrapes, and he expressed gratitude for the quick, professional response. White County Public Safety posted photos of the operation on its official channels, highlighting the teamwork and technology that made the rescue possible.

County officials praised the collaboration between dispatch, drone operators, and the rappelling team, noting that the use of unmanned aerial systems is becoming an increasingly valuable asset in emergency situations across the region.

Safety reminder for outdoor enthusiasts

While the successful rescue underscores the effectiveness of local emergency services, officials reminded residents and visitors to take proper precautions when climbing or hiking in the Georgia mountains. Carrying a fully charged phone, informing someone of your route, and checking weather conditions are essential steps to avoid dangerous situations.

White County’s public‑safety department encourages anyone planning a climb to review safety guidelines and consider partnering with experienced guides, especially on challenging terrain like Mount Yonah.

Looking ahead

The county plans to continue integrating drone technology into its emergency‑response toolkit, aiming to reduce response times and improve situational awareness for future incidents. Residents can follow the department’s updates on social media for tips on outdoor safety and information about upcoming training workshops.
