Whiskey, Wonder, and the World’s Largest Stove: Why You Need to Visit Detroit’s Whiskey Tasting Room at Detroit City Distillery

There is a moment, somewhere between your first sip of a small-batch rye and the second time you look up at the soaring brick arches above you, when Eastern Market’s Detroit City Distillery stops feeling like a bar and starts feeling like a discovery. That moment is exactly why I keep coming back, and exactly why I think you should get yourself there as soon as possible.

Detroit City Distillery sits at 2462 Riopelle Street, tucked inside a restored 19th-century warehouse right on the edge of the Eastern Market district. The building alone earns a visit. Exposed brick walls climb toward a ceiling laced with original timber beams, and copper pot stills gleam under warm industrial lighting like something out of a very stylish dream. The space is enormous but never feels cold — the long wooden bar anchors everything, and the staff have a way of making a room full of strangers feel like a neighborhood gathering.

The distillery produces everything in-house, and they take that seriously. Their lineup includes a wheated bourbon, a Michigan wheat vodka, a gin that leans beautifully botanical, and several whiskey expressions that rotate with the seasons. When you sit down at the tasting bar, you are not drinking a product shipped in from somewhere else and rebottled. You are tasting Detroit — locally sourced grains, local water, local hands. That provenance matters, and you can taste it in every pour.

Order the whiskey flight if it is your first visit. You will get a guided tour of their current releases, and the bartenders are genuinely knowledgeable without being the least bit pretentious about it. Ask questions. They love to talk through the mash bill on a particular bourbon or explain why their rye finishes the way it does. This is the kind of place where curiosity is rewarded.

The food menu is well-considered and far better than the typical distillery snack board. Charcuterie, warm pretzels, thoughtful small plates — nothing that tries to overshadow the drinks, but everything that makes an afternoon stretch pleasantly into evening. On weekends, the energy picks up considerably, with live music spilling into the space and the crowd filling out with locals who clearly consider this their spot.

If the weather cooperates, ask about the outdoor patio. Sitting outside with a glass of their single malt while the Market district hums around you is one of those quietly perfect Detroit afternoons that you end up describing to people for months afterward.

Detroit City Distillery is open Wednesday through Sunday, and tours of the production floor are available — check their website for current scheduling. Parking is easy on weekdays and manageable on weekends if you arrive before the lunch rush. The neighborhood is walkable and full of good energy, especially on Saturday mornings when Eastern Market’s famous sheds are in full swing just a few blocks away.

Detroit has always been a city that makes things. Detroit City Distillery is one of the finest current expressions of that instinct — craft, pride, and a genuinely excellent glass of whiskey all in the same beautiful room. Go taste for yourself.
