There is a stretch of coastline tucked between Bal Harbour and Sunny Isles Beach that somehow manages to feel both completely wild and wonderfully welcoming at the same time. Haulover Beach Park, sitting along Collins Avenue in Miami-Dade County, is one of those rare places where the Atlantic Ocean shows up in full force — deep blue, genuinely powerful, and absolutely breathtaking — and the surrounding park infrastructure makes it easy for anyone to stay all day and love every minute of it.
The park spans more than 177 acres and hugs a narrow barrier island between the ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway, which means you get two completely different waterfront experiences without moving your car. On the ocean side, the beach is wide and well-maintained, with lifeguard towers staffed by some of the most attentive guards in South Florida. The waves here have actual energy — more so than the calmer shores further south — which makes Haulover a favorite among kite surfers, bodyboarders, and anyone who wants to feel the ocean rather than just look at it. On the Intracoastal side, the marina buzzes with boats coming and going, and the park’s boat ramp is one of the busiest in the region on weekend mornings.
What makes Haulover particularly special is the range of people it attracts and the ease with which everyone coexists. Families set up elaborate umbrella villages near the northern picnic areas. Anglers cast lines from the jetty at the inlet, which is one of the most productive fishing spots in Miami. Cyclists roll through on the paved paths that wind through the park’s green interior. And yes, Haulover is also home to Miami’s most well-known clothing-optional beach section, a designated area that has operated peacefully for decades and is simply part of the park’s famously open, live-and-let-live character.
If you time your visit right, you can catch the kite festival that draws enormous, elaborate kites into the sky along the beach every year, or simply arrive on a weekday morning when the parking lot is manageable and the shoreline feels like it belongs entirely to you. Parking is available at multiple lots throughout the park, and the fee is modest for a full day of access. Restrooms, outdoor showers, and concession options are all on-site, so there is no reason to pack up and leave early.
Haulover also sits directly on the Intracoastal, which means the sunsets from the western side of the park are genuinely spectacular — the kind where the sky turns tangerine and the boats on the water become silhouettes and you forget entirely that a major American city is just minutes away.
If you have spent time only on Miami Beach’s more famous stretches, Haulover will feel like a revelation. It is bigger, breezier, and more authentically connected to the natural landscape of South Florida. Pack a cooler, bring a good kite or a fishing rod, and plan to stay until the light disappears. This is Miami at its most elemental, and it never gets old.
