Where the River Meets Your Next Favorite Afternoon: Tumalo Creek Trail to Tumalo Falls

There are waterfalls, and then there is Tumalo Falls — a 97-foot curtain of snowmelt thundering off a basalt cliff into a canyon so green and cool it feels like a different world from the high desert just minutes away. If you have one afternoon to spend outdoors in Bend, this is the one to spend it here.

The trailhead sits about 11 miles west of downtown Bend, tucked into the Deschutes National Forest along Skyliner Road. The drive itself is a slow exhale — ponderosa pines close in around you, the road narrows pleasantly, and by the time you pull into the day-use parking area, you have already started to decompress. Parking requires a Northwest Forest Pass or a day-use fee, so grab one at a local outdoor shop before you head out and save yourself the hassle.

From the main trailhead, the falls are barely a quarter mile away — close enough that families with young children make it there easily, and the payoff is immediate. You round a bend in the path and suddenly the falls are right in front of you, framed by canyon walls dusted with wildflowers in late spring and early summer. The roar is physical. The mist reaches you before the view fully registers. It is one of those rare moments where nature does exactly what you hoped it would.

But do not stop at the base overlook. The real adventure begins when you follow the Tumalo Creek Trail uphill along the north fork of the canyon. The trail climbs steadily through old-growth forest, crossing small wooden bridges and offering glimpses of the creek tumbling below. At around 2.5 miles, you reach Upper Tumalo Falls — far fewer people make it this far, and the smaller cascade feels like a reward kept just for those willing to earn it. The full out-and-back to the upper falls covers about five miles and gains roughly 750 feet in elevation, which is manageable for most moderately active hikers.

The trail is at its most spectacular from late May through July, when snowmelt keeps the falls roaring and the surrounding meadows are alive with color. Come August, the flow calms but the solitude deepens. Dogs are welcome on leash, and well-behaved four-legged companions seem to absolutely love every inch of it.

After your hike, the short drive back into Bend drops you perfectly close to the Westside neighborhood, where a post-trail meal or cold drink is never more than a few blocks away. But honestly, after an afternoon like this one, you may find yourself just sitting quietly in the parking lot for a few extra minutes, listening to the pines and not quite ready to leave. That feeling is Bend at its best — and Tumalo Falls delivers it every single time.
