Where the River Meets Your Glass: An Evening at Perennial Artisan Ales

There are breweries, and then there are breweries that make you feel like you have stumbled into something genuinely special. Perennial Artisan Ales, tucked into the Maplewood neighborhood on the southwest edge of St. Louis, is firmly in the second category. The moment you walk through the door, you understand that this place takes its craft seriously — but never takes itself too seriously.

Perennial opened in 2011, and in the years since, it has built a reputation that stretches well beyond Missouri. Beer enthusiasts around the country make deliberate pilgrimages here, and once you have tasted their work, you will understand exactly why. The brewery specializes in Belgian-inspired and barrel-aged ales, and the depth of flavor in each pour is the kind of thing that slows you down and makes you pay attention. Their flagship Saison de Lis — brewed with chamomile and coriander — is floral and bright and completely unlike anything you will find at a chain brewpub. It is the sort of beer that makes you want to sit by a window and watch the afternoon light change.

The taproom itself is warm and welcoming without trying too hard. Exposed brick, wood tables worn smooth by years of good conversation, and a bar staffed by people who genuinely love talking about what they pour. If you ask what is on draft, be prepared for an enthusiastic and knowledgeable answer. The rotating tap list means no two visits are quite the same, which is half the fun. On any given evening you might find a tart farmhouse ale, a rich imperial stout aged in bourbon barrels, or something completely experimental that the brewing team has been quietly perfecting in the back.

Perennial is also known for their annual release of Sump Coffee Stout, a collaboration with local Sump Coffee that has become a St. Louis institution in its own right. Rich, deeply roasted, and finished with real coffee, it has earned a devoted following that shows up early and waits patiently. If you happen to be in town during a release event, do not miss it.

Maplewood itself is worth exploring before or after your visit. The neighborhood is lined with independent restaurants, record shops, and vintage stores, all within easy walking distance of the brewery. It feels like the St. Louis that locals actually live in, rather than the St. Louis that appears on tourist brochures.

Bring a friend, order a flight, and settle in. Perennial Artisan Ales is one of those places that reminds you why small, passionate, independent businesses matter — and why St. Louis deserves to be on every serious traveler’s radar.
