Where the Lake Meets Living History: A Day at Point Beach State Forest’s Little Sister

There is a moment, somewhere along the winding nature trail at Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary, when the noise of the city completely disappears. A great horned owl blinks at you from behind a mesh enclosure. A white-tailed deer lifts its head from a patch of clover. A red fox trots along the fence line with the casual confidence of an animal that has never once worried about being late for a meeting. That moment is why I keep coming back to this remarkable 700-acre urban wildlife refuge tucked along the western shore of Green Bay, right off East Shore Drive in the heart of the city.

Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary is operated by the City of Green Bay, and that alone sets it apart from nearly any comparable attraction I have encountered in the Midwest. Admission is entirely free. Let that sink in. You can spend an entire afternoon here — watching native Wisconsin animals, strolling beautifully maintained interpretive trails, visiting the hands-on Nature Center — and it will cost you nothing. Families, solo nature lovers, retirees, curious visitors from out of town: everyone is welcome, and everyone leaves with something.

The sanctuary currently cares for more than 30 species of native Wisconsin wildlife, all of which are non-releasable animals that have been injured or imprinted on humans. This is not a zoo in the conventional sense. Every animal here has a story, and the sanctuary’s signage tells those stories with care and warmth. You come away understanding these creatures rather than simply gawking at them. The trumpeter swans gliding across the pond, the bald eagle perched with regal indifference, the river otters tumbling over one another in their habitat — each encounter feels genuinely intimate.

The Nature Center building itself is worth an hour of your time. Inside, you will find interactive exhibits designed with both children and adults in mind, live animal displays, and knowledgeable staff who are genuinely enthusiastic about what they do. If you visit during one of the sanctuary’s scheduled naturalist programs or feeding demonstrations, carve out extra time — these programs consistently draw crowds for good reason.

Outside, the trail system meanders through restored prairies, wetlands, and woodland habitats. Even on a busy weekend, the trails feel peaceful. Bring comfortable shoes, a pair of binoculars if you have them, and plan to linger. The wildflower meadows along the eastern loop are stunning in early summer, and the migratory bird activity in spring and fall rivals anything you will find at much more celebrated birding destinations.

The sanctuary sits just minutes from downtown Green Bay and the Bay Beach Amusement Park area, making it an effortless addition to any itinerary. Pack a lunch, come on a weekday morning if you want the trails nearly to yourself, or arrive on a Saturday with the kids and let the afternoon unfold at its own pace. Either way, Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary is the kind of place that reminds you what a city can be when it genuinely invests in the natural world around it. Green Bay should be proud of this one — and you should absolutely put it on your list.
