Merkin Vineyards is the passion project of rock legend Maynard James Keenan — yes, the frontman of Tool and A Perfect Circle — who has spent the better part of two decades transforming the high-elevation terrain of Jerome and the Verde Valley into serious wine country. The Old Town Scottsdale tasting room serves as the urban anchor for his Arizona wine empire, and it does so with remarkable style and zero pretension. Situated on the lively stretch of East Indian School Road, the space feels like a warm Italian osteria that somehow landed in the Sonoran Desert and decided it belonged there.
Walking in, you are greeted by exposed brick, reclaimed wood, soft candlelight, and a bar lined with bottles that tell the story of Arizona’s surprisingly robust wine scene. The staff know the wines deeply and talk about them with genuine enthusiasm rather than rehearsed salesmanship. They are happy to walk you through a formal tasting flight or simply pour you a glass while you settle into one of the comfortable booths and watch the Old Town foot traffic drift by the front windows.
The food program here is serious. This is not a tasting room that offers a cheese board as an afterthought. The osteria kitchen turns out rustic Italian-inspired dishes with local ingredients — think hand-rolled pastas, wood-fired proteins, and antipasti that make excellent companions to Merkin’s estate wines. The Dos Ladrones white, a blend of Malvasia Bianca and Grenache Blanc grown at altitude, is crisp and aromatic, and it pairs beautifully with the burrata and heirloom tomato salad on a warm Scottsdale evening.
What makes Merkin genuinely special among Old Town’s many dining options is its commitment to place. Every bottle on that menu was grown in Arizona soil, fermented with care, and brought here to tell you something true about this state that you might not have expected. Arizona wine has come a long way, and Merkin is among the loudest and most compelling voices making that argument.
