There are certain neighborhoods in any city that just feel right — where the sidewalks have character, the storefronts tell stories, and the food actually means something. Highland Square is that neighborhood in Akron, and tucked right into its eclectic heart is a spot that has quietly become one of my favorite reasons to make the drive up West Market Street: Salty Not Sweet.
From the moment you walk through the door, you understand that someone put genuine thought into this place. The atmosphere leans cozy and a little quirky — warm lighting, mismatched charm, and the kind of energy that suggests the regulars here actually talk to each other. It does not feel like a chain. It does not feel manufactured. It feels like Akron, which is exactly the point.
The menu is built around the kind of food that makes you close your eyes on the first bite. Think elevated comfort — dishes that take familiar ideas and apply real technique and better ingredients. The savory offerings have a soulfulness to them, and the kitchen clearly understands balance. Salt is used with intention here, not as a crutch, and every plate arrives looking like someone cared about the presentation without being pretentious about it.
What I keep coming back to, though, is the brunch. Akron has no shortage of weekend brunch spots, but Salty Not Sweet earns its place at the top of that conversation. The egg dishes are rich and satisfying, the toast-based creations are genuinely inventive, and the coffee is strong enough to justify the trip on its own. Go on a Saturday morning, find a table near the window, and watch Highland Square slowly wake up around you. There are fewer better ways to spend a weekend morning in northeastern Ohio.
The staff deserve a mention too. Service here feels attentive without hovering, friendly without being performative. You get the sense that the people working here actually like being there, and that attitude is contagious in the best way.
Highland Square itself is worth building a full afternoon around. Before or after your meal, you can wander down to the independent bookshops, browse vintage clothing, or grab a drink at one of the neighborhood bars. The area has the kind of walkability that Akron does not always get credit for, and Salty Not Sweet sits right at the center of it.
If you are visiting Akron for the first time and someone asks you where to eat, this is the answer. And if you already live here and have not made it in yet, consider this your nudge. Some places deserve a line out the door, and Salty Not Sweet is one of them.
