Where Every Bite Tells a Story: Dining at Compère Lapin’s St. Louis Soul at Sidney Street Cafe

There are restaurants you visit once and forget by the time you reach your car, and then there are places that quietly rearrange your expectations of what a meal can be. Sidney Street Cafe, tucked into the Benton Park neighborhood on the south side of St. Louis, belongs firmly in the second category. This is the kind of place that locals guard with a certain possessive pride, the kind where regulars know the servers by name and out-of-towners leave wondering why they don’t live here.

Chef Kevin Nashan has been the heart of Sidney Street Cafe since he took the helm in 2003, and his cooking reflects a life spent chasing flavor across continents. The menu draws from French technique, Gulf Coast soul, and a deeply personal sense of place. You might find a silky bisque that tastes like coastal Louisiana filtered through a Midwestern sensibility, or a duck preparation so precisely rendered it makes you sit back in your chair and just think for a moment. Nashan has earned James Beard Award nominations — multiple times — and it shows in every plate that leaves his kitchen.

The space itself is warm without being fussy. Sidney Street Cafe occupies a beautifully restored 1897 building, and the exposed brick walls and low lighting create the kind of atmosphere that makes a two-hour dinner feel entirely justified. It seats maybe 85 people, which means the room buzzes with conversation but never feels chaotic. This is a grown-up dining room in the best sense — unhurried, attentive, and genuinely gracious.

Benton Park is one of St. Louis’s most charming and historically rich neighborhoods, full of Victorian brick homes and a genuine sense of community identity. It sits just south of Soulard, and the surrounding streets are worth a stroll before or after dinner. Parking is generally manageable along the side streets, which is a small but real blessing when you’re dressed for a nice evening out.

The bar program is worth arriving early for. The cocktails are thoughtfully constructed — not gimmicky, not overly precious — and the wine list rewards curiosity. Ask your server for a recommendation and actually take it. They know the list well and seem genuinely enthusiastic about guiding you through it.

Reservations are strongly recommended, particularly on weekends. This is not a walk-in-on-a-Friday-night kind of place unless you’re comfortable waiting at the bar, which, honestly, isn’t the worst outcome. Sidney Street Cafe is open for dinner Tuesday through Saturday.

St. Louis has a dining scene that surprises people who haven’t paid close attention lately, and Sidney Street Cafe is one of the clearest reasons why. Come hungry, come curious, and give yourself permission to linger.
