When Faith Meets Public Service: A Fire Chief’s Testimony on Religious Liberty and Courage

By OBBM Network Editorial Staff

Donald T. Eason

Imagine being removed from a lifelong career for a book you wrote in private—because its message clashed with today’s cultural climate.

From Firefighter to Fired: The Personal Narrative

During a Cure America summit, former Atlanta fire chief Calvin J. Calkin shared a poignant story that began with a personal tragedy and evolved into a public testimony. After 34 years of service, Calkin was suspended for 30 days and then terminated on January 6, 2015, by Mayor Kasim Reed. The catalyst? A self‑published manuscript titled Who Told You That You Were Naked, written for a Christian men’s Bible study. He explained, “the adverse action was a result of a book that I had written in my own personal private time in my walk of faith for a Christian men Bible study.”

The dismissal sparked a deep reflection on suffering, purpose, and the role of believers in a pluralistic society. Calkin described his journey as a series of “level plains, mountain climbs, and valleys,” emphasizing that suffering can be an essential component of God’s plan.

Faith, Freedom, and the Public Square

Donald T. Eason, host of the Cure America series, framed Calkin’s experience within a broader call to action for pastors and Christian leaders. He highlighted a concerning trend: many evangelical voices feel silenced by “cancel culture” and fear legal or professional repercussions for expressing biblical truth. Eason asserted, “There are too many sons and daughters of God today in our country who have concluded that the price for standing on the truth is too high.”

The discussion underscored the belief that America’s founding principles—particularly religious liberty—are under pressure. Calkin argued that the nation’s prosperity is tied to its constitutional protection of faith, stating, “America has flourished and the American dream is possible for all Americans because principally because of religious liberty.”

Five Markers of Courage and Grace

To help listeners gauge their readiness to confront cultural opposition, Eason outlined five statements that signal a believer’s courage and grace:

  1. Rejoicing in God’s work outweighs complaining about enemies.
  2. Faith in God’s power surpasses fear of opposition.
  3. Hope in divine promises eclipses paralysis from threats.
  4. Empowerment from God’s Word exceeds anxiety over hostile rhetoric.
  5. Acknowledgment of God’s ultimate authority overpowers any human power.

These markers serve as a personal inventory for pastors, urging them to assess whether they can “stand toe to toe and eyeball to eyeball with their enemies in the face of persecution.”

The Role of Alliance Defending Freedom

The summit also featured Kelvin J. Cochran, Vice President and Senior Fellow at Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF). Cochran’s role involves providing spiritual care to ADF staff and fostering church alliances, reinforcing the network’s strategy of uniting faith communities with legal advocacy. Eason emphasized the importance of connecting churches with ADF’s resources, noting that “you need to get majorly involved in the work that they’re doing at Alliance Defending Freedom.”

By integrating legal expertise with pastoral leadership, the partnership aims to protect religious liberty in courts, workplaces, and public policy arenas—a response to the perceived “onslaught of the left” that Calkin described.

Implications for the Broader Christian Community

The narrative presented at the Cure America event reflects a growing sentiment among evangelical leaders: the need for unified, proactive engagement on issues such as sanctity of life, biblical marriage, parental rights, and free speech. Calkin warned that silence and division weaken the church’s influence, stating, “the body of Christ is silent, divided, and passive regarding these issues.”

For congregations across the nation, the message is clear: believers are called to be both witnesses and defenders, leveraging their faith to shape public discourse while remaining rooted in biblical truth. The summit’s call to action urges churches to evaluate their own readiness, encouraging a collective stand that aligns with the constitutional protections that have historically supported religious expression in the United States.

In a climate where cultural norms shift rapidly, the testimony of a former fire chief turned outspoken advocate serves as a vivid illustration of the personal costs and societal stakes involved in defending faith‑based convictions.

As the conversation continues, the challenge remains for the Christian community to translate personal conviction into organized, effective advocacy—ensuring that the freedoms that once allowed a fire chief to serve his city remain intact for future generations.
