What Makes Benbrook Lake Worth the Drive from Arlington?

Can you get a genuinely good cocktail in Arlington without driving to Fort Worth or Dallas? That was the question I kept asking friends for years, and the honest answer used to be: not really. Then Ladder Bar opened on Division Street, and the conversation changed.

Ladder occupies a narrow, two-story space that used to be a tax office — not exactly glamorous origins, but the bones turned out to be right. The ground floor is bar seating and a few high-tops, the kind of room where you can hear the person next to you if you want to, or not if you don’t. Upstairs opens onto a small rooftop patio that catches a breeze in the evenings when the Texas heat finally backs off, usually sometime in late October. I’ve been there in July, though. Worth it.

The bartenders here actually make things. I don’t mean they shake a Marg and call it craft — I mean there’s a rotating seasonal menu where they’re doing their own infusions, working with local honey from a producer out near Weatherford, that kind of thing. On my last visit, I ordered a mezcal sour that used a guajillo tincture they’d made in-house. It arrived with a smoked salt rim and a single dehydrated orange wheel. It tasted like something you’d pay eighteen dollars for in Deep Ellum, except here it was fourteen, and the bartender had time to actually explain what was in it.

Food is not an afterthought. The kitchen runs a short menu — maybe eight items on a given night — focused on small plates and things that pair well with drinking rather than making a full dinner awkward. The charcuterie board is legitimately good, and the smash burger sliders they put out on weekends disappear fast. I’d call ahead or check their Instagram before you go if you’re counting on a specific dish; the menu shifts.

It’s worth saying that Ladder draws a genuinely mixed crowd. Happy hour pulls the after-work office contingent from the offices and medical buildings nearby. Later in the evening you get couples, groups of regulars who know the bartenders by name, and the occasional person sitting alone at the bar reading something, which always strikes me as a good sign for a place’s atmosphere. Nobody is posturing.

Happy hour runs weekdays from four to seven, and the deals are real — well cocktails and draft beers drop a few dollars, and the sliders are discounted. Parking is street parking on Division, which requires some patience on a Friday, or there’s a small lot around back that’s easy to miss the first time. The signage outside is intentionally understated: a small ladder logo above the door, nothing more.

If you’ve been writing off Arlington’s bar scene as a gap between stadiums, Ladder Bar is a reasonable reason to reconsider. It’s not trying to be Dallas, which is exactly the point.
