Westport police are warning residents about a phone scam that falsely claims to be about jury duty. The police department says it has recently received several inquiries and complaints about a phone scam with someone falsely claiming to be Officer Brian McCarthy.
According to police, the caller tells victims that they missed jury duty and attempts to convince them that they need to take immediate action. Authorities remind residents that the Westport Police Department will not call you to demand payment or threaten arrest for missing jury duty.
Residents should also never provide personal or financial information to unsolicited callers and should be cautious of anyone creating a sense of urgency or anyone requesting payment by gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfer or other unusual methods. If you receive a call like this, you should hang up immediately.
