Westmont Observatory Opens for Near‑Total Lunar Eclipse in Montecito

Montecito, Calif. – On the evening of August 27, the Westmont Observatory will open its doors to the community for a rare near‑total lunar eclipse that will bathe the Santa Barbara area in a deep, reddish hue. The eclipse is expected to reach roughly 96 percent coverage, leaving only a thin sliver of the moon illuminated.

What to Expect

As the Earth moves directly between the sun and the moon, most of the lunar surface will slip into Earth’s shadow. The small amount of sunlight that does reach the moon will be filtered through our atmosphere, casting a copper‑red glow that many observers describe as “blood moon.” The event will begin shortly after sunset and will be visible to the naked eye, though binoculars or a modest telescope will enhance the view.

Family‑Friendly Learning

Local astronomers and volunteers from the Santa Barbara astronomy club will be on hand to explain the science behind the eclipse, answer questions, and help visitors locate the best viewing spots. The observatory’s staff will provide brief talks on the lunar cycle, the mechanics of eclipses, and the cultural significance of lunar events throughout history.

Community Gathering

This gathering offers a wholesome, family‑oriented way for residents to come together under the night sky. Parents can bring children to spark an early love of science, while seniors and longtime sky‑watchers will enjoy sharing their knowledge. The event aligns with the community’s tradition of fostering educational experiences that strengthen family bonds and celebrate the wonder of God’s creation.

Practical Details

Westmont Observatory is located at the base of the Santa Ynez Mountains in Montecito. Admission is free, and parking is available on the observatory grounds on a first‑come, first‑served basis. Visitors are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets for comfortable seating, as well as a light jacket for the cool evening air. No special equipment is required, but binoculars or a small telescope can enhance the experience.

Safety and Courtesy

Organizers ask attendees to respect the observatory’s property, keep noise to a minimum, and follow any posted health guidelines. The event will be conducted in accordance with local public‑health recommendations, ensuring a safe environment for all ages.

For more information, please visit the Westmont Observatory website or contact the volunteer coordinator at (805) 555‑1234.
