Western Europe has just experienced its warmest June on record, according to EU scientists. The average temperature in the region was 20.74 degrees Celsius, more than 3 degrees above the average for June during 1991-2020.
Heatwave Impacts
The extreme heatwave at the end of the month smashed temperature records, disrupted power supplies, and shut schools. National authorities reported over 4,700 excess deaths in France, Belgium, Spain, and the Netherlands during the June heatwave.
Greenhouse gas emissions, mostly from burning coal, oil, and gas, have increased the planet’s average temperature to around 1.4 degrees above pre-industrial times. This higher baseline means temperatures can now hit higher peaks during heatwaves.
