In the heart of West SoMa, a dozen neighborhood artists gathered at 6M Community Arts, an arts space supported by the Tenants and Owners Development Corporation, to create unique pieces out of discarded materials. Led by local artist Fuzz E. Grant, the workshop aimed to ‘make new species out of the detritus of society.’ This initiative is just one example of the many efforts underway to foster a sense of community and creativity in the area.
A History of Artistic Expression
West SoMa’s contemporary arts scene has its roots in the late 1980s and early 1990s, when spaces like Bindlestiff Studio and the 6th on 7th Photography Workshop began providing a platform for Filipino artists and SRO residents to showcase their work. Today, the neighborhood is home to numerous art spaces and programs, including drop-in workshops and galleries with rotating shows.
One such space is 6M Community Arts, which has been providing weekly art workshops and gallery showings since 2021. The organization’s director, Kerim Harmanaci, notes that ‘people don’t expect there to be good art here,’ but the community has come together to create a thriving arts scene. Artists like Christine ‘CJ’ Johnson, who was recruited to participate in 6M after experiencing homelessness, have found a sense of purpose and belonging through their art.
Challenges and Opportunities
Despite the many successes, the West SoMa arts scene also faces challenges. The rising cost of living and the influx of tech companies have made it difficult for artists to find affordable space. However, organizations like Kultivate Labs, which has helped local artists find space to create art since 2018, are working to address these issues. The nonprofit’s executive director, Desi Danganan, notes that the tech industry can be a positive force in the community, citing examples like Heron Arts, an exhibition and community space founded by a former computer programmer.
As the West SoMa arts scene continues to evolve, it is clear that the community is committed to preserving its creative spirit. With the help of organizations like 6M Community Arts and Kultivate Labs, local artists are finding new ways to express themselves and connect with one another. The future of the arts in West SoMa looks bright, with a vibrant and diverse community of artists and supporters working together to create a thriving cultural scene.
