West Palm Beach Mayor Keith James announced Monday that he is pausing work on the city’s proposed Downtown Master Plan and creating a resident-led committee to provide input on future development after weeks of growing public concern over the pace of growth.
Community Input Sought
The announcement came just days after concerns were raised about dozens of major development projects planned across the city and calls for greater transparency in how decisions are made. James told city commissioners the planning process must earn the public’s trust.
The proposed master plan includes changes that could allow buildings up to 25 stories along portions of the downtown waterfront. The mayor’s announcement came during the same City Commission meeting in which commissioners approved the appointment of Related Ross Vice President Jordan Rathlev to the seven-member Downtown Development Authority.
Residents who spoke welcomed the mayor’s decision to create a resident committee but said they still want more transparency in how appointments are made to influential city boards and assurance that residents have a meaningful voice in decisions shaping West Palm Beach’s future.
