West Memphis Pursuit Ends in Crash After Wrong-Way Drive on I-55

In West Memphis, Arkansas, a dramatic pursuit unfolded on May 29 when a vehicle, driven by Shermon Harper, led Arkansas State Police on a high-speed chase. The incident began when Trooper Gunner Fultz noticed a vehicle closely tailing his patrol car and making a lane change without signaling.

Fultz attempted to initiate a traffic stop by activating his emergency lights and siren, but the driver accelerated instead. The chase intensified as the vehicle ran a red light at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Broadway, reaching speeds of approximately 100 mph.

The situation escalated when the driver made a sudden left turn and began traveling the wrong way on Interstate 55. The vehicle struck two road signs before veering off the roadway and crashing into an industrial building.

Driver’s Condition and Charges

After the crash, Trooper Fultz approached the vehicle and instructed the driver, Harper, to exit. Harper, who appeared intoxicated and had slurred speech, was assessed by EMS at the scene before being transported to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Crittenden. At the hospital, Harper refused a chemical test offered by Fultz.

Due to Harper’s apparent intoxication and injuries, he was cited and given a court date instead of being taken to jail. Harper faces several charges, including felony fleeing, felony criminal mischief, driving while intoxicated, and refusal to submit to chemical testing, among others.

As always, all suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
