Democratic lawmakers are demanding answers after the reported detention of a West Hartford restaurant owner, Sead Cecunjanin, by immigration agents. Cecunjanin, the owner of Portobello Restaurant on Park Road in West Hartford, was reportedly taken into custody last week outside a Dunkin’ location nearby.
Community Reaction
Employees and family members gathered with lawmakers outside West Hartford Town Hall on Monday, calling for more information about Cecunjanin’s detention. U.S. Rep. John Larson described the detention as unlawful and called for Cecunjanin’s immediate release.
Employee Dee Abraham praised Cecunjanin, saying she quickly realized the impact he had on those around him. Cecunjanin’s son, Emir Cecunjanin, described the moment his father was taken into custody, saying he pleaded with officers before his father was taken away.
Larson criticized the lack of information surrounding the detention, highlighting Cecunjanin’s longstanding ties to the community. Larson also emphasized the need for comprehensive immigration reform.
Not everyone at the event agreed with calls for Cecunjanin’s immediate release. West Hartford resident Mark Walsh said he wants more information before drawing conclusions.
