Firefighters in West Hartford, Connecticut, battled a large fire at an industrial facility on Friday morning. The fire was reported around 9 a.m. at a facility on Railroad Place, with heavy smoke and flames visible upon arrival.
Crews from West Hartford, as well as mutual aid from surrounding stations, including Hartford, Newington, and UConn fire departments, responded to the scene. The fire was burning aluminum, prompting a response from the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP).
A non-PFAS-containing foam was used to dampen the fire and protect the exposed building. Fortunately, the fire had not yet reached the occupied areas, and all occupants were accounted for. However, one firefighter experienced a heat-related issue and was taken to a hospital for treatment, where they were listed as stable.
The West Hartford Office of Emergency Management provided support to crews, including hydration, due to the extreme heat conditions. The fire was deemed under control after approximately two hours. An investigation into the fire’s origin will be conducted by the fire marshal’s office, and an environmental contractor will assist with the cleanup.
