Wellness influencers face growing demand for verifiable, science-backed claims

Social media has become the primary source for health and wellness advice, with 40% of U.S. adults reporting they turn to influencers for guidance, according to a 2025 Pew Research Center study. The trend is especially strong among adults under 50, the uninsured, and Black, Hispanic, and Asian American communities.

Consumer skepticism rises

While 54% of viewers say influencer content helps them understand healthy living, trust is waning. Only a minority of influencers describe themselves as health‑care professionals, and just 17% of those have conventional medical training. As a result, 24% of consumers admit they trust little to none of the information they receive.

“Science‑backed” is an unregulated label

Brands frequently market products as “science‑backed,” a term that carries no legal definition. It can refer to peer‑reviewed studies, clinical trials, third‑party testing, or general scientific knowledge, but the quality and relevance of the evidence vary widely. Consumers are increasingly demanding clear explanations of what the label means and how to verify the claims.

What constitutes reliable evidence?

Experts point to randomized, controlled clinical trials as the gold standard. Open‑label or observational consumer studies are considered less rigorous because participants know what they are taking and there is often no placebo group. Third‑party review by reputable bodies, such as an institutional review board, can add credibility.

Impact on purchasing decisions

Transparency is now a key driver of sales. A Citruslabs survey found 85% of shoppers are swayed by scientific claims, and brands that provide clear, evidence‑based information report higher awareness and return on investment. Over two‑thirds of consumers say they would switch to brands that prioritize transparency.

Industry outlook

The wellness market is projected to grow from $6.82 trillion in 2025 to $10.36 trillion by 2030. As the industry expands, the shift toward evidence‑based messaging is expected to continue, with viral “miracle cure” trends giving way to more substantiated, educational content.

For influencers and brands, the path forward involves simplifying scientific data for the public, securing third‑party validation, and being upfront about the strength of their evidence. Doing so may restore consumer confidence and sustain growth in a market that increasingly values authenticity and factual integrity.
