Wellness influencers face growing demand for verifiable, science-backed claims

Social media has become the primary source for health and wellness advice, with a 2025 Pew Research Center survey indicating that 40% of American adults turn to influencers for guidance. The trend is especially strong among adults under 50, the uninsured, and Black, Hispanic, and Asian American communities.

Consumer skepticism rises

While 54% of viewers say influencer content helps them understand healthy living, trust is eroding. Only about a quarter of consumers fully trust the information they receive, and 24% admit they trust little to none. The lack of verifiable credentials fuels this doubt; most top wellness influencers do not hold formal health‑care qualifications, and just 41% describe themselves as health‑care professionals, with only 17% coming from conventional medical backgrounds.

‘Science‑backed’ is an unregulated label

Brands frequently market products as “science‑backed,” a term that carries no legal definition. It can refer to peer‑reviewed studies, clinical trials, third‑party testing, or established scientific knowledge, but the quality and relevance of the evidence vary widely. Consumers are increasingly demanding transparency so they can verify claims themselves.

What counts as solid evidence?

Experts highlight three tiers of research:

  • Clinical trials – Randomized, controlled human studies with treatment and placebo groups are considered the gold standard.
  • Consumer studies – Open‑label or observational studies where participants know what they are taking; these are less reliable than clinical trials.
  • Third‑party review – Independent testing by reputable bodies, such as an institutional review board (IRB), helps ensure unbiased results.

Two‑thirds of shoppers say they would switch to brands that prioritize transparency, and 85% say scientific claims influence their purchasing decisions, according to Citruslabs data.

Industry response

Wellness companies are adapting. Brands that provide clear, evidence‑based messaging report higher brand awareness and better return on investment. The market, projected to grow from $6.82 trillion in 2025 to $10.36 trillion by 2030, is shifting away from viral, anecdotal trends toward educational, research‑driven content.

What consumers can do

Shoppers are taking a more active role: reading labels, researching ingredients, and seeking expert opinions. A 2025 Emplifi report found that 56% of consumers spend over an hour researching products priced above $500, and many read multiple reviews before purchasing.

As the wellness industry evolves, transparency and authentic, science‑backed communication are becoming essential for maintaining consumer trust.
