The State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) has opened an inquiry into sexual assault allegations at Charles B. Aycock High School in Pikeville, Wayne County. The allegations involve members of the school’s football team and prompted a Title IX investigation by the district.
District response and student support
Wayne County Public Schools (WCPS) released a statement confirming that it has met with all students involved and put in place appropriate supportive measures. The district emphasized that student safety and security remain its top priority and that it is cooperating fully with law‑enforcement agencies as required by law.
“We are working to thoroughly, accurately, and swiftly follow the process,” the statement read. “Given student privacy requirements and the ongoing investigations, we cannot provide specific details at this time.”
Sheriff’s Office and SBI collaboration
Two weeks ago the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office received the initial report and has since been working closely with SBI to investigate the claims. Public Affairs Director Joel Gillie said, “We are working through the process to ensure a full investigation is completed. We want residents to know that we are working behind the scenes to find out exactly what happened and if any charges will be filed.”

Both the Title IX investigation and the criminal probe remain active. WCPS said it will continue to provide resources and counseling to any student who needs it while respecting privacy laws. The district also noted that it will keep the community informed as the investigations progress, within the limits of the law.
