Waukesha County, Wis. – With the World Series set to bring baseball fans from across the nation to Milwaukee, the Waukesha County Airport is preparing for what officials say could be the busiest period in its history.
Runway reopened after summer construction
Allison Bussler, director of the Waukesha County Department of Public Works, explained that a $24 million construction project forced the airport’s east‑west runway to close over the summer, coinciding with the traditional peak week of the EAA AirVenture event. The runway has now reopened, and Bussler said the timing was “perfect” because the work included a runway safety area and a new taxiway, both of which are now ready for use.
Expecting a surge of private‑plane traffic
During peak times, the airport could see as many as 400 private aircraft land or take off each day. The bulk of that traffic is expected to be round‑trip flights between Wisconsin and Florida, where many World Series fans will travel to watch the games. American Family Field, the home of the Milwaukee Brewers, sits just 16 miles from the airport, making it a convenient gateway for visitors.
Additional staffing and parking plans
To manage the influx, Bussler said the airport is hiring extra staff and arranging additional airplane parking spaces. “We’re really excited and ready to take more flights,” she said, noting that the recent improvements to the runway and taxiway will help accommodate the higher volume safely and efficiently.
Community impact
The anticipated traffic boost is expected to benefit local businesses, especially those catering to travelers and aviation services. Residents can also look forward to smoother operations thanks to the recent infrastructure upgrades.
The airport’s preparations reflect a broader effort by Waukesha County officials to support the region’s role in a major national sporting event while ensuring safety and convenience for both visitors and the local community.
