Waterloo Road Antiques Rewards the Patient Browser

Most people pull off South Walnut expecting a quick spin through a few booths, maybe a dusty lamp or two, and a polite exit. That’s not quite how it goes at Waterloo Road Antiques.

The shop sits south of downtown on a stretch of Walnut that doesn’t advertise itself. There’s no marquee, no banner sale, no Instagram-ready mural out front. What there is: a low-slung building packed so deliberately it almost reads as curated. You’ll spend more time here than you planned — not because it’s chaotic, but because whoever has been stocking these shelves has actual taste.

Walk in and you’re moving past mid-century furniture first — proper pieces, not the laminate stuff that passes for vintage at estate sales. A Danish-style teak credenza was priced around $385 on a recent Saturday, which is fair for Sherman and wouldn’t be embarrassing in Dallas. Past that, you get into the booth-style vendor mix: Depression glass, old Grayson County ephemera, Bakelite odds and ends, enamelware, oil paintings in ornate frames that were probably hanging in somebody’s dining room in the 1970s. The variety is real, not manufactured.

What catches you off guard is how much of it has been actually researched. Price tags on the more significant pieces include brief notes — origin, approximate date, what to look for. That’s a vendor taking pride in what they sell, not just turning inventory. It signals something about the clientele, too: this isn’t a casual tourist drop-in. The regulars here know what they’re looking for.

The glassware section in the back left draws the most focused shoppers on weekends. Carnival glass, Depression-era pink and green pieces, a few rarities mixed into the display — it’s the kind of section where you want to slow down. Items run from a few dollars for common pieces up into the $50–$80 range for anything with age and condition on its side. Nothing felt outrageously priced, and nothing felt suspiciously cheap either.

If you go on a Saturday morning, you’ll have the place mostly to yourself before noon. After that, the booth vendors tend to drift in and the conversation level picks up — which can be useful if you want to negotiate or ask questions. Most of the vendors are local, some longtime, and they’re generally willing to talk about what they’re selling if you’re genuinely curious. You won’t get a hard sell.

Budget roughly an hour, though ninety minutes is more honest if you stop to really look. Parking is easy — pull around back or along Walnut without much fuss. Cash is preferred but not required; most vendors will run a card for anything above twenty dollars.

Sherman has a handful of antique shops, and each has its own personality. Waterloo Road skews toward buyers who came in with a list rather than buyers who came in on a whim. If you’re chasing a specific piece of mid-century furniture, vintage kitchenware, or old Texas photography, this is the place to call first. If you’re just wandering, you’ll still find something — just don’t expect to be in and out in fifteen minutes.
