Washington Warns Troops of Unhealthy Water in 1776

On July 30, 1776, George Washington warned his soldiers about the unhealthy water in New York City. According to his General Orders, the pump water in the city was very unhealthy, and he ordered troops to avoid it.

Protecting the Troops

Washington directed the quartermaster and commissary generals to establish a fresh-water supply and to provide canteens as soon as possible. He also ordered the inspection of water stored in the defensive works and its replacement when necessary.

Meanwhile, in Philadelphia, Congress examined the reasons behind the collapse of the American invasion of Canada. They identified three main causes: short enlistments, the lack of hard money, and smallpox.

Congress’ Findings

Congress found that short enlistments made troop strength unstable, encouraged disorder and disobedience, and pushed commanders to make decisions they might have postponed if they could rely on their men remaining in the field. The lack of hard money made supplies difficult and uncertain, prevented the creation of proper magazines, and left military pay of little practical use to soldiers.

Smallpox was also a significant factor, as it regularly kept a large share of the northern army unfit for duty. Congress ordered trials for several officers and directed Maj. Gen. Philip Schuyler to investigate allegations of mistreatment of Canadians.
